The Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS is an elegantly designed compact digital camera in metallic silver and black that has a range of interesting features.

With 6 megapixel CCD sensor, the Canon IXUS 800 IS captures every detail to ensure high quality prints and the 4x optical zoom lens feature Canon's optical image stabliser technology which neutralises camera shake especially at slower shutter speeds, low light and full zoom.

The DIGIC II processor within the Digital IXUS 800 IS ensures that this camera operates swiftly with the appropriate settings for any scenario being instantly selected prior to the shot being taken. There are also 16 special shooting modes to choose from, such as beach and underwater, where specific selections are made for you in difficult lighting conditions. The My Colors mode allows colour effects to be applied before and also after shooting.

The Canon IXUS 800 IS has IS0 800 and high ISO auto settings and by using ISO 800, it is possible to have flash free shooting both indoors and in low light conditions. The inclusion of the ISO range also reduces the blurring of your image due to shaky hand or the movement of your subject.

Dependent upon memory capacity, the IXUS 800 IS can take longer 30fps VGA movies with sound or QVGA movies at 60fps. All images can be viewed on the large 2.5" LCD which has a wide viewing angle and offers choices of brightness to suit indoor or outdoor shots.

The Canon IXUS 800 IS is compatible with any PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible photo printer and prints are then available at the touch of a button. If available to you, the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY gives you 100 MB of web space on which to put your own online photo album and the software for this comes with the package.

This camera is a little more expensive than others but the extra cost is definitely worth it. Not having used an IXUS before it took me a little while to get used to the 800IS but once you get the hang of it the resulting colour and sharpness of image is well worth the effort. Its also pretty quiet compared to other cameras and the battery life is excellent. Haven't tried all the special scene modes yet but I am getting some great shots on my own. Recommended

A compact but slightly heavier camera and it took a bit of use for me to be totally comfortable with the controls. However, it is a great performer and 99% of my pics are excellent. The colour and precision, I have been told, is down to the image stabilisation feature and this, I would say, gives the 800IS great advantage over others.

Would recommend to all levels of experience
