Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS Review

Successful photography is made easy using the Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS with its quality range of features and compact styling. This camera has a distinctive look in that it has a three tone metallic finish and curved design and weighs approximately 165g without batteries.

The Canon IXUS 950 IS has 8 megapixel CCD with primary colour filter which captures the finer details of your shot and with ample resolution to enable poster size prints to be made without loss of quality.

The 4x optical zoom includes Image Stabiliser technology which counteracts camera shake and when combined with the 4x digital zoom, 16x zoom is possible. There are seven elements in 5 groups (2 aspherical elements, including one UA element), this UA element ensuring clarity throughout the zoom range. Sharp, clear images are possible due to the inclusion of the DIGIC II processor as this has a quick response time and the iSAPS technology which selects the optimum settings prior to a shot being taken.

ISO sensitivity range with the IXUS 950 IS is auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1600. The ISO 1600 allows for quality images to be shot even in low light conditions and in areas where flash photography is not permitted. White Balance options are auto, daylight, tungsten, flourescent, custom and cloudy, flash modes are auto, manual flash on/off with slow sync speed and red-eye reduction (in playback). Face Detection AF/AE/FE will ensure that the optimum focus, exposure and flash settings are operating when taking shots of people thus producing excellent facial shots.

The Digital IXUS 950 IS has real-image zoom optical viewfinder and a 2.5" P-Si TFT Pure-Colour LCD with approximately 100% coverage and which has an anti-glare and scratch resistant coating. In additional to the usual modes of auto, manual, digital macro and movie, special scene modes are available and these include; portrait, night, indoor, snow, beach, fireworks, underwater, creative light effect and kids & pets. These special modes have settings preselected for you to suit the particular scene you want to shoot. The My Colours features offers, vivid, neutral, black & White, sepia, various skin tones and custom.

Still image types are JPEG (Exif 2.2)/DCF, DPOF with movie images of AVI (Motion JPEG + WAVE) and are stored on SD/SDIIC/MMC memory cards with 32MB memory card supplied with the camera. The Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery NB-5L with battery and charger supplied, the life of the battery being approximately 230 shots.

The Canon IXUS 950 IS is PictBridge compatible.

A great little camera with everything an amateur could wish for in a camera. I am very pleased with the image quality as the photo's are very sharp and clear. The camera is small enough to fit in your pocket.

I am extremely pleased with this camera. The picture quality and colour balance and sharpness is outstanding in a camera at this point in the market. If it is a compact digital camera you are looking for then this one has all you will need.

The build is extremely robust also. I flicked it out of the case accidentally causing it to bounce sickeningly on a stony road in Cairo. It has continues to work perfectly and suffered only an almost invisible scratch to the body work.

I think the first reviewer is a little harsh about the night shots etc. I am pretty pleased with the results I get. Try the equivalent Olympus !
