Canon PowerShot A650 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot A650 IS has 12.1 megapixels with a 1/1.7" sensor, 6x optical and 4x digital zoom and the ability to capture fine detail which allows cropping and enlarging without detriment to quality.

The DIGIC III (with advanced noise reduction) delivers a high speed performance resulting in excellent colour and clarity, the iSAPS technology will optimise settings before the shot is taken.

The 6x optical zoom has optical image stabiliser technology which counteracts the effect of blurring due to camera shake and face detection technology which automatically detects up to nine faces within a frame and selects the most appropriate focus, flash and exposure settings. Red-eye correction can be actioned during playback. The digital tele-converter and safety zoom gives extra magnification without affecting quality and is equivalent to using a tele-converter attachment.

The Canon A650 IS has a real image zoom optical viewfinder and a vari-angle 2.5" P-Si TFT monitor that has an approximate coverage of 100%. Images are stored as JPEG (Exif 2.2), DCF and DPOF and movies as AVI Motion JPEG +WAVE and the Canon A650 IS works with SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HCMMCplus memory cards, A 32MB memory card is supplied with this camera and the 4x AA alkaline batteries will cover approximately 300 shots or 1080 minutes. If these are replaced with Canon NB-3AH batteries life would be extended to 500 shots and 1140 minutes.

Various shooting modes are available in addition to manual whereby settings have been preselected to suit particular situations and these include; night, kids & pets, beach, fireworks, snow, underwater, portrait and landscape. My Colors feature enables special effects to be applied in-camera to images and movies and these include; black & white, sepia, custom, vivid, on/off and neutral. ISO equivalents within the Canon PowerShot A650 IS are auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1600, White Balance has auto, daylight, tungsten, cloudy, underwater, custom and fluorescents and flash modes include; auto, manual on/off, slow sync and red-eye reduction. VGA movies with sound can be recorded at 30fps (640x480/320x240) and 15fps (160x120).

The PowerShot A650 IS is PictBridge compatible, weighs approximately 300g and measures 112.1 x 67.8 x 56.2mm.
