Canon PowerShot A710 IS Review
With 7 megapixels CCD and 6x optical zoom with optical Image Stabiliser, the Canon PowerShot A710 IS can get closer to the action whilst eliminating blurring.
The Canon A710 IS produces high quality images as the Canon DIGIC II image processor and iSAPS ensure fast response and correct camera settings. It is possible to produce larger images without any loss of quality and detailed crops.
Because the IS technology allows for camera shake it is also possible to take shots both indoors and in low light conditions without the use of flash. The 9 point AiAF ensures that even off centre subjects are focused correctly.
Images can be checked on the bright 2.5" LCD which has a wide viewing angle for easy viewing and approximately 100% coverage. To help with the composition of your shot there is a selectable Grid Line and a 3:2 ratio overlay shows printable area for standard photographs. The PowerShot A710 IS has an optical viewfinder with real image zoom.
The Canon PowerShot A710 IS ISO speed equivalents are auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800 with White Balance selections of auto, custom and preset of daylight, tungsten, fluorescent, cloudy, and underwater. The built-in flash modes include auto, red-eye reduction, slow syncro, on and off.
There is a choice of 20 shooting modes including 10 special scene modes where selections have been preset and a full range of manual modes for personal selection. Special scene modes include night, kids and pets, snow, beach, indoor, foliage, fireworks and underwater. My Colors allows colour effects to be applied both to images and movies and include vivid, neutral, sepia, black and white, skin tones and custom.
The Canon A710 IS stores still images as JPEG compression (Exif 2.2)/DPOF and movies as AVI (Motion JPEG compression + WAVE). A 16MB memory card is supplied in the package and SD/SDHC/MMC cards can be used in addition. 30fps VGA quality movies can be shot with sound as can QVGA movies at 60fps.
The Canon PowerShot A710 IS is powered by 2x AA alkaline batteries which come with the camera or NiMH batteries can be used. It is PictBridge compatible and a wide range of accessories is available including wide and tele converter lenses, close-up lens and slave flash.

I have recently acquired an A710 and although on the expensive side it is an impressive and flexible camera to have.
It can go in my pocket, has good zoom and plenty of manual choices. Pictures are of high quality and it has been relatively easy to use without wading through manuals.
One comment I have is that I have found it to be a little noisy on night shots and I definitely needed to quickly buy a much larger SD card.
This is not just a point and shoot camera, albeit a very good one, as it has enough manual control to keep me, as an experienced photographer, happy and the addition of the image stabiliser also gives this camera greater scope. It would suit most photographers' needs since it has a lot of pluses and only a couple of minuses.
