Canon PowerShot A720 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot A720 IS is a camera that will allow you to take as much control as you wish. It has an 8 megapixel sensor for detailed quality, 6x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom with the optical zoom being backed by an optical image stabiliser which counteracts the effects of blurring.

Manual and various preset shooting modes are available to choose from and these include; portrait, landscape, kids & pets, snow, fireworks, beach, underwater and night scene.

My Colors allows for in-camera colour effects to be applied such as; neutral, sepia, black & white, vivid and custom colour. The Canon A720 IS also has DIGIC III with advanced noise reduction which contributes to superior colour rendition using high ISO speeds. People shots are successful as the PowerShot A720 IS has Face Detection AF/AE/FE whereby faces are automatically detected (up to 9 within a frame) and the appropriate focus setting chosen. If any red-eye has occurred this can be corrected in playback.

The Canon PowerShot A720 IS has a real-image zoom optical viewfinder and a 2.5" TFT screen with approximately 100% coverage. Still images are stored as JPEG (Exif2.2), DCF and DPOF and movies as AVI (Motion JPEG) plus WAVE. A 16MB memory card is supplied with the camera which uses SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HCMMCplus memory cards and the 2x AA alkaline batteries supplied will produce approximately 140 still shots and 540 minutes playback. If Canon NB-2AG batteries are used these would give approximately 400 shots and 660 minutes.

ISO sensitivity equivalents are auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/20/400/800/1600 which help counteract camera shake and produce better results in low light conditions, flash offers auto, manual (on/off), slow sync and red-eye reduction. White balance has auto, cloudy, tungsten, daylight, fluorescents, underwater and custom.

VGA movies with sound can be filmed at 30fps (640x480/320x240) and 15fps (160x120) and the Canon PowerShot A720 IS is Pictbridge compatible.
