Canon PowerShot G9 - UK Digital Camera Review

Canon PowerShot G9 Review

The Canon PowerShot G9 gives the photographer flexible control and a range of accessories which can set high standards in the field of compact photography.

12.1 megapixels with 1/1.7" CCD sensor produces such fine detail that pictures are not affected by cropping or enlarging. RAW mode does not use processing or compression and images are as taken by the sensor, software then gives control of post-shoot editing.

The Canon PowerShot G9 has 6x optical zoom with optical image stabiliser technology and 4x digital zoom (approximate combination of 24x zoom). The stabiliser technology counteracts the effects of camera shake and allows slower shutter speeds in low light conditions. The DIGIC III (with advanced noise reduction) offers high speed performance resulting in excellent colour and clarity whilst iSAPS technology will optimise settings prior to a shot being taken. Face detection AF/AE/FE will automatically detect faces in the frame and use optimum settings for focus, exposure and flash whilst 9-point AiAF and FlexiZone AF/AE technology offers a choice of focusing options.

The Canon G9 has a real-image zoom, optical viewfinder and a large 3" high resolution PureColor wide viewing angle LCD screen which is scratch resistant and has an anti reflection coating. Images are stored as JPEG (Exif 2.2), DCF, FAW and DPOF and movies as AVI Motion JPEG +WAVE. The PowerShot G9 is supplied with a 32MB memory card and is compatible with SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HCMMCplus memory cards.

There are 25 shooting modes which range from automatic (where settings have been preselected) to full manual control and these include; custom, landscape, portrait, night, indoor, snow, fireworks, beach, underwater and kids & pets. The My Colors feature allows for special effects to be added on-camera such as sepia, black & white, neutral, vivid, light and dark skin tone, custom and vivid green and red. ISO equivalents are auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1600, White Balance has auto, fluorescent, underwater, customs, tungsten, cloudy and daylight with flash modes of auto, manual on/off, slow sync and red-eye reduction.

The Canon PowerShot G9 is supplied with rechargeable Li-ion battery NB-2LH giving an approximate life of 240 shots or 420 minutes playback. A battery charger is included within the package.
