Canon PowerShot S1 IS - UK Digital Camera Review

Canon PowerShot S1 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot S1 IS is a particular must for those of you who specialise in taking pictures of nature, be it flora or fauna. As it is not always easy to be as close to your subject as you would wish, this camera has applications which help solve the problem.

A combination of the 10x optical zoom lens with an Optical Image Stabilizer (IS) and Ultrasonic Motor (USM) not only supplies a powerful zoom (38-380mm in 35mm format) but the USM also allows for quick and quiet shots which your subjects won't be frighted by, thus resulting in the photo you most wanted to achieve. Excellent, detailed close-up pictures are achievable; birds, animals, flowers, children.

You can also record up to 1GB of movie or more depending on the size and speed of your memory card with the increased Movie Mode and 10x optical zoom lens allowing you to record detailed movies with flicker-free VGA resolution. Manual use can improve the image quality and sound. The PowerShot S1 IS uses a rate of up to 30 fps and automatically adjusts the exposure, focusing and white balance as you film.

To allow you a more creative input, the PowerShot S1 IS has 12 shooting modes, manual to auto, together with 1 custom setting. Another advantage is that the IS significantly reduces camera shake at full zoom and in low light conditions.

The PowerShot S1 IS uses Canon Visionary Technology to ensure the best performance possible by optimising settings whilst the high-performance DIGIC processor and Image Rendering technology produces fast processing and true colour.

Amongst the optional accessories available are wide/tele converter lenses and a waterproof case.

An editing software package is included within the price of the Canon PowerShot S1 IS which allows printing directly to a PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible photo printer without the use of a computer. If the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY is available in your area, this will give you 100MB of free web space for storing and sharing pictures via the internet.

The zoom is great you can get in really close, but you do need the image stabilisation, especially if you have shaky hands. The video is also a good feature of the S1 IS providing you have a large memory card (I bought a 512 Mb card with the camera). You can take great shots on fully automatic mode but it is worth taking the time to read the manual to learn what all of the many features do.

The only problem I have with this camera is the time it takes to take a shot, which is especially bad indoors, otherwise this is a good camera but I would recommend buying a bigger memory card and some rechargeable batteries.

I have taken loads of photos of my kids using this camera and so far have no complaints whatsoever, I emailed the photos to my family and they are all amazed by the quality. I also bought a canon colour printer to go with it which is also excellent. It is a huge difference compared to my old kodak.

You can manually configure this camera for more creative shots or you can go fully automatic. It doesent take long to figure out all the manual settings and it allows you much more control. The photos and video quality are above average although low light can be a an issue. The image stabilisation is really good when taking a shot at full zoom, and the 10x makes this a great all round camera.

This is my first digital camera and I think its great, I havent had any previous experience and am a bit of a technophobe, but I have managed to take some really good quality pictures and the 10x zoom is great. I also love the flip out screen and the video function. It is quite a big camera but it has all the features you'll ever need.
