Canon PowerShot S5 IS Review
The Canon PowerShot S5 IS offers a wide range of movie options as well as the many still options. An extremely versatile camera with an 8 megapixel sensor capturing the smallest details and 12x optical zoom with Image Stabiliser technology counteracting camera shake, the Canon S5 IS offers the ability to crop or enlarge without any loss of quality.
The PowerShot S5 IS has 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom which, when combined, offer 48x zoom. There are 11 elements in 9 groups (1 aspherical and 1 UD).
Lenses include tele-converter, wide-converter, lens adapter/hood set and close-up lens. ISO sensitivity ranges from auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1600 with ISO1600 allowing improved image shooting under low light conditions or where flash photography is not permitted. White Balance has auto, cloudy, daylight, fluorescent, tungsten, flash and custom. Red-eye correction can be made during playback .
DIGIC III with iSAPS ensures a quick response and excellent quality with the iSAPS technology taking in the details of each scene and selecting the appropriate camera settings prior to taking the shot. Face Detection AF/AE/FE can detect up to 9 faces in a scene and will select the optimum focus, exposure and flash settings to ensure that these faces are shot accurately. Face Detection also works in movie mode even when the subject is moving. A hotshoe on the Canon PowerShot S5 IS allows the use of selected Canon Speedlite flashes.
Movie options are 30fps VGA with stereo and QVGA at 60fps, type AVI (Motion JPEG + WAVE). Still image types are JPEG (Exif 2.2), DCF, DPOF. The PowerShot S5 IS takes SD/SDIIC and MMC memory cards with a 32MB card supplied with the camera which is powered by 4x AA Alkaline or NiMH batteries (supplied). Memory life is approximately 170 shots with the supplied batteries and 450 shots if using Canon NB4-300 batteries.
The Canon PowerShot S5 IS has an EVF viewfinder and a vari-angle 2.5" P-Si TFT LCD with approximately 100% coverage. There is a range of shooting modes which include; manual (for creativity) and Super Macro together with Special scene modes where the settings have been preselected to suit certain situations. These special modes include: indoor, night, aquarium, snow, beach, fireworks and foliage. The My Colours feature enables you to apply in-camera colour to both images and movies and effects include: vivid, sepia, black & white, neutral, custom and various skin tones.
The Canon S5 IS is PictBridge compatible.
