Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is a camera with plentiful features but which is so easy to use that the whole family can try out their photographic talents.

The camera has an 8 megapixel sensor for detailed images and ease of cropping, 10x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, the optical zoom has optical image stabiliser technology and this compensates for camera shake and produces great clarity.

Buttons and the control dial are very clear to use offering opportunities whatever level you are and there are also 18 shooting modes to choose from where settings have been preselected to suit various situations and these include; portrait, landscape, night, beach, snow, fireworks and kids & pets, there is also a manual option. My Colors effects which can be applied to both still images and movies include; vivid, black & white, sepia, neutral and custom.

Images are stored as JPEG (Exif2.2), DCF and DPOF (still) and AVI Motion JPEG +WAVE (movie) on SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HCMMCplus memory cards. A 32MB memory card is supplied with the camera as are 2x AA Alkaline batteries. The supplied batteries produce approximaely 140 shots and 420 min. playback or 400 shots/600 min. playback if Canon NB4-300 batteries are used. Images can be shown on the 2.5" P-Si TFT wide-view LCD screen (approximately 100% coverage).

The Canon SX100 IS comes with a DIGIC III processor with iSAPS technology and this produces high speed performance resulting in excellent colour and clean images at high ISO speeds. ISO equivalents are auto, high ISO auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1600, White Balance is auto, cloudy, fluorescents, tungsten, daylight and custom. Flash modes are auto, manual on/off, slow sync and red-eye reduction. The Canon SX100 IS also has face detection technology whereby faces in the frame are detected and the optimum exposure and flash settings selected for best results.

VGA movies with sound can be recorded at 30fps (640x480/320x240) and 15fps (160x120). The PowerShot SX100 IS is Pictbridge compatible and weighs approximately 266g.
