Nikon Coolpix 8800 - UK Digital Camera Review

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

The 8800 is a very versatile camera which, in addition to its 10x optical zoom with a 35-350mm focal range, offers other lens converters such as tele, wideangle and fisheye. For even greater creative freedom there are optical filters, speedlights, software and other accessories available.

The extensive zoom range of 10x zoom in this digital camera means that most images are available to you. Because of this wide range it has a feature called Vibration Reduction (VR) which compensates for the inevitable camera movement that will occur. The VR also helps in low light conditions by achieving sharp images as well as when taking telephoto and macro shots, working well with the telephoto converter lens.

Being an 8.0 megapixel digital camera, the 8800 can enlarge up to A3 size prints without loss of quality.

The exclusive Advanced Red-Eye Reduction automatically removes red-eye from your image once the pre-flash has fired. The flash has TTL capability when connected with the SB-600 and SB-800 speedlights.

The D-Lighting feature, which is exclusive to Nikon, is in the Playback mode. This feature will improve any underexposed areas without affecting areas that have the correct exposure.

Within the Coolpix 8800 there is a process referred to as white balance adjustment. This means that images will be processed according to the light source in order to produce the colours as you actually see them regardless of whether the lighting is dull or bright.

20 seconds of sound can be linked to each still image using the Voice Memo function.

I had my camera for 13 months when I got the dreaded System Error 2 message. The camera would have to be turned off every time this happened or the battery had to be removed. This was sometimes after every picture. That said the quality remained the same. The camera had to be returned to Nikon and the estimate I received was for £165. What a shock.
I have since discovered that this error is not unique. Be warned take out insurance - just in case - to cover this error.

The pictures it took were on the whole good except it the quality disappeared when taking pictures in low light. It is a shame that I no longer have any faith in its reliability.

This camera is as near to SLR quality as you will get and is simpler to use. I have found that my Coolpix 8800 is a very satisfactory alternative to carrying around a DSLR as it is much lighter and smaller. This little camera can take some great photos and because the lens quality is so good, the finished result is very sharp. Battery life obviously depends on usage but I have taken a good number of images and have not had to put a new battery in but I have heard others say that the battery life is poor.

I am not a professional photographer but I really enjoy using my Coolpix 8800 which I chose after reading as much as I could about the various cameras that are on the market.

My wife and I went to Scotland on our last holiday and, by using the 10x optical zoom, we now have some outstanding photos in our album. Everything has come out so clearly even though we were some distance away from our subject at times.

We have been fairly creative so far but I am sure there is much more to come.

Have previously been using a D70 and I have to say that I have been disappointed in the Coolpix 8800. I found it slow, battery life poor and difficulty in focusing in low light. Not as professional as I had hoped.

I did a lot of research before buying the Coolpix 8800 as I did not want to spend a lot of money and be wrong - and I love this camera. It looks good, is made well, is pretty compact and has 10x optical zoom and, for me, the vibration reduction is a useful too. I have taken photos from macro to 10x zoom with fantastic results and am really enjoying using this camera. Hopefully I will have it for a few years yet.

Have been interested in photography for some years now and decided to invest in the Coolpix 8800. I have not been disappointed.

This is a very flexible camera with a great many features, some of which I may never use. It also offers a good range of accessories.

The 10x zoom has enabled me to capture some great shots especially because of the addition of the vibration reduction. Any photographs I am really plesed with I print onto A3, frame them and hang them at home. This way I can constantly change my decor for a small cost.
