Nikon D3 - UK Digital SLR Camera Review

Nikon D3 Review

The Nikon D3 has 12.1 megapixel FX format CMOS sensor and an ISO range of between 200 and 6400 (ISO 100 can also be achieved) which together with an Expeed image processing engine gives superb tonal gradation.

The scene recognition system combines metering and AF sensors resulting in precise images of high quality and picture controls give control over contrast and brightness with four options; standard, vivid, monochrome and neutral.

There are two crop modes, DX format and 5.4 ratio, the DX being operated with a DX lens and continuous shooting of 9fps (11fps in DX crop mode). Images are stored as NEF (RAW) and JPEG and can be played back on the 3" wide viewing angle TFT LCD as full frame, slide show, zoom, auto image and thumbnail (4 or 9 segments). Live view with autofocus can be operated using the LCD monitor and two modes are available, handheld or tripod. The Nikon D300 has an SLR-type viewfinder with fixed eye pentaprism and built-in diopter adjustment, coverage of approximately 100% and magnification of approximately 0.7x.

The Nikon D300 has multi-CAM3500FX 51-point AF system which can be configured in 9-point, 21-point and 51-point coverage settings and active D-lighting which will automatically apply tone control at the point of shooting. The Nikon D300 has a durable Kevlar shutter unit with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8.000sec and flash sync of up to 1/250 sec. Flash sync modes are front and rear-curtain, slow and red-eye reduction. White Balance offers auto and seven manual modes can be set.

A rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL4a is supplied together with a quick charger and the Nikon D300 is compatible with various Nikkor lens; G or D AF, DX AF, AF, AI-P and non CPU. The Nikon D300 has a quick response time of approximately 37ms shutter lag and 55ms viewfinder blackout.

The durable magnesium body has dimensions of 6.3 x 6.2 3.4" and weighs approximately 2.7lb without battery or memory card. Two additional features are HDMI video output interface which allows connection to HD video systems and Wireless LAN and Ethernet support via an optional wireless transmitter (WT-4).
