Nikon D40X Review
Compact and lightweight, the Nikon D40X is simple to use having easily available help menus and is ready 0.18 seconds after turning the camera on so that those special moments are captured.
The Nikon D40X with 10.2 megapixels DX format image sensor and Nikkor lens delivers precise, true to life images which can easily be enlarged.
The Nikon 3D colour matrix metering can create the correct exposure for most all lighting conditions and the 3 area autofocus will give accurate focusing whether at the beach or watching a football match.
The camera's viewfinder is bright and clear and images can be played back on the 2.5" LCD monitor that has brightness adjustment. Playback choices are one frame, thumbnail (4 or 9), slide show, magnified, highlight point display, histogram and auto image rotation.
The Nikon D40X has a Hand Assist Images feature which guides you to correct choices for particular scenes and 8 Digital Vari-programmes that will automatically choose settings that will achieve the very best results for the prevailing conditions. ISO sensitivity ranges from 100- 1600 which allows shooting in low light conditions without the use of flash (the D40X has built-in flash). White Balance has 6 manual modes and auto.
The Nikon D40X comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL9 and Quick Charger MH-23, the supplied battery has a life of approximately 520 shots in single-frame mode. Images are stored as NEF(RAW) and JPEG, Exif 2.21 Compliant DCF 2 and DPOF and the Nikon D40X works with SD memory card and is SDHC compliant.
When external Speedlights are in operation, the Nikon D40X supports the advanced creative lighting system which can turn dark situations into successful shots.

Opted for this model rather than the older D70s due to the increased size of sensor. It is a very good quality piece of kit, as you would expect from Nikon, but I am a little disappointed in regards to lens compatibilty. Will only function fully with DX lenses (with the built in silent wave motor) which really limits what you can acheive. Nikons range of lenses is legendary but the new DX series isn't their best, in my opinion.
In conclusion, I would rather have bought the older D70s with the smaller image sensor. Lets face it.... 6MP prints are just as good as 10MP to the naked eye!!

Top notch camera that makes it very easy to take great photos. Help icon shows when it thinks you have got it wrong push the button and it tells you what to do. Very very low noise on this camera and the 10 mp sensor is superb.Better built than the 400d and with the current 60 pounds rebate from Nikon you would be mad to miss this.

This is a FAST and precise camera when it does it all for you i.e. in Auto mode. Manual settings (thanks to a slightly cluttered menu) a tad fiddly. Can't fault image quality. Superb. Great for beginners with its help button. Compact enough to keep it with you at all times to catch those 'oh I wish I had a camera with me' moments.

the D40x is a superb camera it is quick and very responsive and is easy to use for learners and enthusiasts alike.
Used on auto it will always deliver rich colourful images but you have the option of customising to suit how you like ie contrast, saturation etc.
Even at high ISOs ie 1600 the images are very usable but the 3200 iso I would only use if it was necessary.
I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone.
