Olympus µ [mju:] 770 SW Review

The Olympus µ [mju:] 770 SW has a stylish metal casing and comes in a choice of Midnight Blue, Mocca Brown and Titanium Grey. This is a tough compact camera that is shock-proof from up to 1.5m, is waterproof to a depth of 10m, crushproof up to 100kg and freezeproof to -10°C.

In addition to 7.1 megapixel CCD sensor and 3x optical zoom, the Olympus µ [mju:] 770 SW has BrightCapture Technology which attains best performance in low light conditions.

There is also a choice of 24 scene modes where settings have been preselected to give best results for certain situations and all you need to do is select the one that suits the scene you wish to shoot. These choices include; portrait, landscape, night, indoor, sports, sunset, candle, fireworks, beach & snow, underwater and cuisine.

The Olympus µ 770 SW has an internal memory of 18MB and still images are stored as JPEG, EXIF, PIM, DPS, DPOF. Movies with sound are stored as AVI Motion JPEG / WAV and can be recorded as; 640 x 480/320 x 240/160 x 120 at 15 fps up to card capacity. Still images can be viewed on the 2.5" HyperCrystal LCD as calendar, slide show, in rotation, album, index and zoom whilst movies can be viewed frame by frame, fast forward or reverse playback. There is a selection of edting modes including; black & white, sepia, red-eye reduction, resizing, frame/calendar/title attachment and correction of brightness and saturation.

ISo sensitivity can be auto or manual choice from 80/100/200/400/800/1600, the internal flash offers auto, red-eye reduction, off, fill in and wide and tele working ranges. The White Balance choices are sunlight, overcast, fluorescents and tungsten.

The Olympus µ [mju:] 770 SW has a panorama function with comes only with the optional Olympus xD-Picture Card.

I have had 2 of the 770SW cameras. the first one broke down after 2 uses in the water, approxamatly 1 hour total time in water

I sent it back to Olympus and they sent me a new one after about 4 weeks.

The problem seemed to be that the USB port on the side of the camera leeked. In the manual it says you may get a drop of water in the battery compartment which I did, but nothing about the USB port ....Any water within the camera is a bit risky i would say.

for a 7.1 megpix camera i would say the image quality is about 3.5 megpix not great

Very tough camara, survives almost anything. However, picture quality is not great (not bad, just not superior) and camera lacks some handy function, such as automatic rotation of the pictures (it does not record the H/V position). It is a bit overpriced, however, if you are sporty person, you can overcome lower image quality since its metalic body can withstand almost anything.
