Olympus µ [mju:] 850 SW Review

The Olympus µ [mju:] 850 SW is a tough compact camera with a metal body; it is waterproof to 3m, shockproof up to 1.5m and freezeproof. It also has 8 megapixels, many technological features, 3x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom.

Face Detection technology (as well as 3x optical zoom) ensures perfectly focused and exposed faces within your shot, Digital image stabilisation compensates for blurring; in low light conditions the BrightCapture technology works toward a quality image whilst the TruePic III image processor handles images faster and therefore produces better quality.

The Olympus µ [mju:] 850 SW also has a choice from 24 scene modes where settings have been preselected to ensure optimum results for certain scenarios and these include; night, indoor, candle, sports, sunset, fireworks, beach and snow, documents, portrait and landscape. There are also three underwater choices and shooting up to water pressure equivalent of 40m can be successful when using the optional underwater case (PT-0341).

ISO sensitivity auto covers between 64 - 1600 and manual choices are 64/100/200/400/800/1600. White Balance has sunlight, fluorescents, overcast and sunny and the internal flash runs as auto, red-eye reduction, fill-in or off.

Still image recording has DCF, EXIF2.2, PIM III, DPOF and images can be viewed on the 6.4cm/2.5" HyperCrystal LCD and be seen even in bright sunlight conditions. Playback of still images includes slide show, zoom, calendar, index, rotation and favourite with movie playback as frame by frame, fast forward or reverse. Movies are recorded as AVI Motion JPEG, WAV with sound. Still image editing possibilities include sepia, black and white, resizing, shadow adjustment, red-eye reduction and the attachment of frame, title or calendar with movie editing as index.
