Olympus SP-550 UltraZoom Review

The Olympus SP-550 UltraZoom has an exceptionally wide 18x optical zoom which when combined with 5.6x digital zoom gives 100x zoom. Close-ups can be taken with the Super Macro mode from as near as 1cm (wide) or sport can be shot from a distance without loss of detail.

The combination of the mechanical image stabiliser and high ISO setting (Dual Image Stabilisation) ensures sharp results even when the subject is moving, there is camera shake or when using high magnification. The Olympus SP-550 UltraZoom also has the benefit of 7.1 megapixel CCD sensor.

A choice of 23 scene modes are offered by the Olympus SP-550 UZ such as underwater, landscape, portrait, sports, fireworks, night, beach, snow, behind glass and sunset where all you have to do is choose the one that relates to your subject and press the button, optimum settings have already been preselected.

The Olympus SP-550 UltraZoom has an electronic viewfinder and a 2.5" LCD where still images can be viewed as calendar, album, slide show, index, zoom, rotation and histogram and movies as frame by frame, fast forward, reverse and index jump. Still images are recorded as JPEG, RAW, EXIF 2.21, PIM III, DPS, DPOF and movies at QuickTime Motion JPEG / WAV with both 640x480 and 320x240 at 30fps. Images can be edited using any of the following; sepia, black & white, trimming, resizing, correction of brightness and saturation and by attaching a frame/title/calendar/layout.

ISO sensitivity ranges are auto/50/100/200/400/800/1600, White Balance offers; fluorescents, manual, adjustment, sunlight, and overcast. The SP-550 UltraZoom has an internal flash with auto, red-eye reduction, fill in, off, red-eye + fill in, slow sync, wide and tele working range and flash compensation.

Panorama processing is also an option but only by using Olympus xD-Picture Card and the SP-550 UZ has an internal memory of 20MB.
