Samsung NV10 Review

With Schneider-KREUZNACH lens producing crystal clear images, 10.3 megapixel CCD. 3x optical and 5x digital zoom, all housed in a black aluminium body, the Samsung NV10 is a perfectly balanced compact camera.

The Samsung NV10 with the new Smart Touch user interface and large 2.5" LCD on the back of the camera, makes it easy to operate.

The built-in pop up flash is located above the lens and this location makes for greatly improved image results whilst the ASR technology sustains image clarity and colour when using the flash. The effects of camera shake are also greatly reduced in low light conditions and pictures can even be taken without flash giving a more natural result. Flash options are off, auto, fill-in, slow sync and red-eye reduction.

ISO equivalents of the Samsung NV10 are auto/100/200/400/800/1000 (ISO 1000 allows clear indoor pictures to be taken in the dark without the blurring resulting from camera shake). White Balance options include auto, manual, daylight, cloudy, tungsten and fluorescent.

There are 11 preset scene modes within the Samsung NV10 where settings have already been selected to suit particular situations and these include; night, portrait, landscape, sunset, dawn, children, fireworks, beach and snow and text. The text mode enables text documents to be shot clearly.

The Samsung NV10 can shoot MPEG-4 movies at 30fps, 320 x 240 (QVGA)/640 x 480 (VGA) and these can be edited on the camera itself.

A lithium battery powers the NV10 which has an inbuilt memory of 20MB. The battery can be charged via USB or via the SBP-4442 battery kit which is an optional accessory.

From the very first picture I took, image quality has been outstanding.
Colour balance, sharpness, lack of noise are all at a brilliant level. For the first time I can see that I may now be able to live without fretting that my old OM2 and Zuiko lenses, shooting with Velvia professional, would do a better job. They certainly cannot do such a convenient job. There are some facilities I will never use -- most of the frames are just barking mad!
But the variety of rapid shoot modes, the macro and the differences that you can keep factored in between AUTO, P and M are superb, allowing for changes of shooting mode/exposure/speed settings by one click of the wheel. The three-shot bracketing feature is very good too, though if Iw as picky I would have gone to a 1 stop difference each way. I bought the NV10 thinking it was a jumped-up Olympus Trip; in fact this camera can challenge Digital-SLR quality. A superb package at a brilliant price and superbly convenient to use. By the way, the touch buttons become 2nd-nature after about a week.
