Images are recorded as JPEG (DCF), Exif 2.2, DPOF, AVI (MPEG-4), WAV and are stored on the 45MB internal memory or MMC/SD card (up to 2GB). Images can be viewed on the 2.7" colour TFT LCD monitor. Playback features are single image, thumbnails, movie clip, slide show and editing includes resizing, trimming, rotation and effect. Effects include normal, sepia, red, blue green, black & white and negative.

The Samsung S1030 has MPEG-4, VGA movie function with audio and recording time depending upon memory capacity (640x480/320x240/160x128 - 30fps/15fps). Special effect functions include; colour, highlight, composite shot and photo frame and these can be accessed via the user friendly 'E' button. ISO sensitivity equivalent is auto, 80/100/200/400/800/1000 which allows the use of faster shutter speeds to give better results in low light conditions and with a moving subject. White Balance offers auto, cloudy, fluorescents, daylight, tungsten and custom and flash modes include auto, auto + red-eye reduction, slow sync, fill in flash and flash off. In addition to the easy to use manual controls there are special scenes such as landscape, dawn, sunset, night portrait, children, beach & snow and fireworks that have preselected settings.

The Samsung S1030 is powered by 2x AA alkaline batteries which give an approximate battery life of 40 minutes. Connection to any PictBridge compatible photo printer produces instant prints at the touch of a button.

Overall-Amazing value for money.
I Like to be powered by rechargable AA batteries, thus never being 'caught short'. However, the S1030 has shown- power remaining to be OK-then the camera has shut down during the following vid.clip. It does seem to demand a lot of power and cannot be connected to to mains whilst downloading vid.clips & pics.
Currys advertise the original price as £199, but I have yet to see proof of this, it is, however great value at £ 89.00.
(Argos also have an S1050, with more advanced features, at £99, but it appears larger.)

I was initially disappointed because the camera kept shutting down and freezing. I was about to take it back when I saw that the batteries that came with the camera had expired about 6 months ago. Dropping in some freshly charged rechargeables, it became a different camera.

Using the expired batteries and internal memory, it was slow to process the pics and slow to recharge the flash. With a fast SD card and new batteries, it boots up in a very short time (about 2 seconds) and can take shots in quick succession.

The menu is intuitve and easy to use. You should be able to work out the basics without using the instruction manual. It has an impressive array of features and allows for a good deal of manual control. For example, I created a great photo almost straight out of the box by setting the shutter to 8 seconds and changing the fstop and iso to compensate. This created a still background with the wife and cat an artistic blur of motion.

It can also take full motion vodeo (30 frames per second) with sound (although the only way to control the zoom when in film mode is to move the camera backwards and forwards).

All in all, for £89.00 (from Currys or PC World) this is a great compact camera for fun pics and vids and some basic arty photos.
