The fixed lens system was actually a bonus when I was in Indonesia as concerns over dust and humidity didn't arise. Its a very easy to use system and the live view tiltable LCD allows shots from almost any angle. I just wish it had a wireless commander.

As a keen portrait photographer the best feature of this camera for me is the LCD screen. The ability to use it as a 'waist level finder', in portrait or landscape, is priceless. Is there any other digital camera, apart from the Hasleblad, that can do this?
Try mounting it low on a tripod and taking some portraits and you will discover the benefit of being able to communicate with your sitter without your face jammed behind the camera. Working this way makes composition an easier, somehow a more thoughtful process. It also helps the sitter as the camera is no longer a barrier between you.
I just hope that Sony, or another manufacturer, will design a DSLR with this feature but in the meantime, with its great lens and big sensor this will keep me happy for a good few years.

DSLR here is your Nemesis !!!
Just the RAW format makes it a great contender agaist DSLR and the 10 Mg Pixels is a treat.
I love it and will not consider a DSLR altough my other camera (as they say) was a Hasselblad!!!

THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF THIS CAMERA IS THE LIVE VIEW, MENTIONED BY MANY BUT SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY GREAT.
HOLDING THE CAMERA TO MY EYE I CAN COMPOSE AS USUAL WITH THE ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER, THEN IN APERTURE PRIORITY I CAN TWEAK THE EV OR WHITE BALANCE AND SEE THE EFFECT IMMEDIATLEY, EXACTLY AS THE PHOTO WILL BE, FANTASTIC!
I HAVE ONLY PRINTED TO 12 X 8 SO FAR BUT THE PRINTS ARE VERY SHARP.

I have been using the R1 for quite some time now and I beleive it is full value for the money you spend. The Lens alone gives you the full value. The camera is very user friendly. The night time photographs witht ehvariable gflash are superb. The greens look greener and the blue looks bluer through the R1. I believe this camera to be the best today.

I was a bit reluctant purchasing the Sony DSC R1. Although I had read excellent reviews on this camera, the sales assistant tried to persuade me to go for the new Sony Alpha DSLR. I'm glad I didn't listen to him!
This camera is superb. I photograph stills (mostly bouquets and fruit baskets) for gift delivery web sites. I have to say that I was more than pleased with the results of the DSC R1.
I especially liked the LCD display. Fantastic and innovative idea. No more crouching or kneeling on the floor to get the best angles. The display rotates and can be viewed at any angle.
The automatic White Balance settings were also excellent and produced the exact results I was looking for without the need for manual white balancing. The 10 Mega Pixel images are superb but are way more than enough for my purpose as I normally convert to jpg anyway.
I can't comment on the built in flash as I have never had to use it yet.
The battery life was nearly three hours which I was pleasantly surprised at. I have found it to be longer than the manual states!
No dust! As the lens is fixed (and an excellent lens its is by Carl Zeius) you never need to worry about dust on the sensor. Although this may not suit some of the professionals it is perfect for me.
Multi metering mode is great and exposure levels are easily set. It has the useful bracketing function but does not go over +/- 1. I was surprised at this as my old Cannon EOS 350 had a far wider range. However, this is trivial as I find that bracketing exceeding -/+ 1 is not required for my purposes.
Have I any criticisms? Yes but only minor ones. I would like to have seen a video function.
What else?.... the timer is annoying as you have to keep switching it on before each shot. My Cannon EOS 350d timer stayed on shot after shot until you switched it off which was much better.
My only other grievance was the size of the camera. Although I acknowledge that Sony have crammed a lot into the camera, I must say it is too big for my small hands. I must confess I preferred the grip on my much smaller Cannon EOS 350D.
I liked the fact that Sony has had the insight to accept CF cards as well as memory sticks which is definitely a plus point.
Several reviews I have read criticized the zoom but I find the zoom more than adequate for my needs.
Finally I would like to praise the Sony Picture Imaging software and did I mention you can see a live histogram on the LCD display before you take the picture? Amazing!
You will have concluded by now that I love this camera. The thief who stole my Cannon EOS 350D (long story) has done me a favor as I have went out and replaced it with this. I am now producing better pictures than my Cannon EOS (and Nikon D70) had produced in the past. Now don't get me wrong, the Cannon and Nikon cameras are excellent - just that this is slightly better for what I am using it for. I even got to compare it to the new Sony Alpha and I still preferred the DSC R1. OK it's a bit of a hybrid somewhere between "point and shoot" and DSLR but I do believe it gets better results, at least for my type of photography work. It's a shame that this camera seemed to be overlooked. I think it is very much in the shadow of the new Sony Alpha which is a shame because if people gave it a try they would see just how good this camera actually is.

The DSC r1 has a really good lens (nearly worth buying the camera for that alone). I thought it was good value for money, what you see on the screen is the image that you end up with and final photos are excellent quality. Twilight and darker shots come out well using the variable flash and daylight shots are superb. It is an easy camera to learn to use and it offers a lot of modes to play with. Most of what I have taken so far has been stationary so I cannot comment on what sort of quality you may achieve with moving objects.

I wouldn't say that I was pernickety about my photography but I do like quality. This I have found in the DSC r1 cybershot, not only have I found it easy to use and hold but the image quality is excellent.
It has an absolutely great lens for the price of the camera and it looks good overall.
Having both the eye-level viewfinder and the LCD is particulary helpful as it can cope with different situations easily.
The zoom range is a bit limited but I have not found that to be too much of a problem.
If you appreciate high quality images you will like this camera.

This is a camera that can produce image quality without trying. Great lens with a zoom range to suit most of us and an APS sensor - you can't go wrong. The DSC R1 is well made and versatile, plenty of opportunity to use your imagination when preparing shots.
I say again - superb quality images. Would recommend.

WOW! What a great camera, the screen is superb allowing you to take photos from almost any angle, combined with the 10 megapixels and great lens makes this a superb choice for the enthusiast photographer, the viewfinder is another excellent feature which most digital camera manufacturers tend to neglect. The image quality is seriously good compared to its rivals, this camera is a joy to use, I would definately recommend.

Not so sure about the look of the DSC-R1, but having used it for a while I am very pleased with my purchase, although the zoom is a little dissapointing compared to other semi-professional looking cameras. The image quality is great with no blurring even at full optical zoom. I was a bit worried about damaging the lcd screen but the build quality seems pretty good. The resolution of the images is amazing, I am used to a 4MP camera so this is quite a step up for me.
