Sony DSC-S600 Cybershot Review
The Sony DSC-S600 Cybershot with its high resolution 6 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens and 5.2 smart zoom offers great variety of choice for both the absolute beginner and those with more aptitude. It also produces clear, sharp pictures which can be printed as 11" x 17" or 8" x 10" with cropping.
If you are a beginner, the selection of Automatic means that you are allowing the Sony DSC-S600 to make the relevant setting decisions for you until you have gained some experience of your own. Then you may want to choose from the various scene options available such as Twilight, Landscape, Beach and Snow. For example the Twilight mode can be used when you have a low light situation, or Landscape when you want to take a distance shot.
For the more experienced photographer there is still a range of options to work through with the adjustable White Balance covering a variety of lighting situations. These include Auto, Cloudy and Daylight whilst within the Picture Effects setting, images can be recorded in Sepia or Black and White.
The DSC-S600 Cybershot has an AF illuminator which helps when light conditions are darker and this also works well with the Twilight mode. The flash unit also has relevant modes which include red-eye reduction.
The Sony DSC-S600 has a focal length of 5.1 - 15.3mm and the minimum focal distance is 4.75" which allows you to take close up shots. Within the camera there is a self-timer mode which gives a delay of 60 seconds, just enough time for you to be in the picture.
Movies can be taken with the Sony DSC-S600 which works at 30 or 16fps or with sound as long as the memory card has availability.
The Sony DSC-S600 has an internal memory of 32MB and images can be downloaded onto a PC or Macintosh via a USB 2.0 connection. It also uses two AA batteries.

I have had this camera for 18 months now. I have been extremely pleased with it. It's my first digital camera. I have taken lots of photos. It is easy to use. Excellent zoom. But, I have just started experiencing problems. When I switch the camera on to take a photo, a message appears on the screen "turn off and back on again". So I do this, but nothing. It just keeps repeating itself. I have looked into it on the web and other users of this camera have experienced the same thing. Apparently it's to do with the lens not working properly. Like I say, I've had this 18 months and it has been so well looked after. 6 months out of guarantee and now starting to experience a problem. I have written to Sony to let them know. Other users of this camera say that they had to pay a high repair fee, and it was apparently cheaper to buy a new camera. If this happens to me, I shall be replacing the camera, but not with a Sony I am afraid. It seems such a shame that it is just out of guarantee. I thought it would last for years. So beware!

This camera is amazing for it's quality and value. To me, it's easily worth twice what it costs. Here in the states it costs less than $200.00, and it is so good that it makes you want to throw rocks at the S500 that Sony replaced it with. Evidently the S600 is too good and was cutting into their sales of more expensive cameras.
I have several digital cameras, and the S600 is my favorite.
I've had an S600 since last spring, and have taken about 100 pictures with it. It's a fantastic camera for the money, so I've ordered another one before they go away.
It has a 31mm wide angle zoom lens, and that's wider than most digital cameras of that price range.
Its flash shoots twice as far as most other cameras in it's price range, 11 meters.
It records movies at 30 frames per second, with sound.
It can shoot at ISO 1000, which makes it usable in dim light without using the flash.
It will auto-focus in the dark, because it has it's own illumination source for dark focusing.
It takes sharp pictures, better than cameras that cost much more, and it does it with a German formula "Carl Zeiss" lens.
It has an optical viewfinder that zooms with the lens, meaning you can take pictures without using the good 2 inch LCD screen, if you want to, and thus save your batteries.
It's easy on batteries, and in a pinch it will work with standard alkaline AA batteries, 2 of them.
Get an S600 while you still can, because people are catching on, and the supply is drying up. This camera will make you want to throw rocks at the S500 that replaced it. Really.

My children bought me the Sony DSC-S600 Cybershot digital camera for a Mothers Day pressie and I am over the moon with it. It is so easy to use and to be honest I have only had to look at the manual once. I am enjoying capturing photos of my children and connecting with a USB cable to my home computer to print them out straight away. The 3 x optical zoom is good, the Carl Zeiss lens is the best, anti red eye feature is a dream and a 6 megapixel camera, what more can I say, it is great. It really is a fun, compact and great value for money digital camera. I would recommend this camera to all of you potential users who are considering going digital for the first time. Like the site found it helpful.

I bought the S600 for my daughter as, from reading various articles, I thought it would be a good all-round digital camera for her to start with.
She loves the fact that it is so small that she can carry it around in her jacket pocket - she's never been one for handbags. It has also been very easy for her to use, she started on automatic and is progressing gradually through the other options available.

My sister bought me my S600 so that I could keep in touch with photos whilst away at University.
I had never had a digital camera before and have been surprised, but very pleased, at how easy it has been to use and that I can select an email image size which lets me send images to my family via the net.
AA batteries are also an advantage
