Sony DSC-W5 Cybershot - UK Digital Camera Review

Sony DSC-W5 Cybershot Review

The Sony DSC-W5 Cybershot has 3x optical zoom lens (38-114mm lens) which is supported by 6x digital zoom and 12x smart zoom and a macro mode which allows you to be as close as 6cm to your subject.

This camera is easy to use and the picture quality, backed by a fast shutter response, is excellent. The main control is on the top of the camera with the remaining controls at the back and the menu system is easy to find your way around.

Used in automatic mode, all you have to do is compose your picture and press the button. Manual mode will allow you to decide on shutter speed and aperture setting.

There is a wide range of features including scene modes which are designed to help you with your shot under particular conditions. These include Beach, Landscape, Twilight, Snow and Candle and to move on a step further there are more advanced controls; exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, multi pattern and white balance. The DSC-W5 Cybershot covers a wide area of experience from the beginner to the more serious amateur.

The DSC-W5 has a large 2.5" LCD screen which can be used to review images, access the menu and because key information is displayed there it can warn you should your battery be low or memory is running out.

The built in flash has a maximum range of 4.5m and has four settings; not fire, always fire, automatic fire and slow synchro. Also, in poor light, you can select the auto focus illuminator which will improve the focus.

The Sony DSC-W5 Cybershot can also produce quality movies, the highest resolution being 640x480 at a speed of 30fps. This camera can also be connected to a computer, television or a PictBridge compatible printer.

Two rechargeable AA batteries and a charger are part of the package and the DSC-W5 has 32mb of internal storage.

I have another 7megapixel camera, but the Sony beats it hands down although fewer pixels. The Carl Zeiss lens is fantastic and the camera is really easy to use . The batteries last for ages and the picture quality is breath taking. A really nice camera, and the memory sticks are getting cheaper all the time.

Great camera! It is very fast at taking photos and has excellent battery life, the photos are really really good quality (the best I've seen). I have dropped it and it seems to have survived very well, probably due to the tough body. The buttons are well layed out but I have found a slight issue when taking a photo, sometimes you can turn the wheel while pressing the button, but this does'nt happen very often. Overall a great camera and I would definately recommend.

Previously I had a Kodak camera but when I dropped it the battery cover came off so I had to replace it, after searching through lots of reviews I decided to get the DSC-W5, what a difference, it no longer takes me 10 seconds before i can take another shot, it now seems almost instant, also the build quality seems far superior to my last camera, I think this will withstand some abuse. The picture quality and easy of use are fantastic, the buttons are easy to use and feel nice to use, unlike the plasticky kodak, the screen is also an excellent size, which is good for my aging eyes. This seems to be an excellent camera that will hopefully last for years.

I bought this camera mainly because it has such a HUGE screen, what a difference it makes being able to see what your taking properly, even in bright sunshine you can clearly see what's going on, and the images are fantastic quality. The battery life is another point thats worth mentioning, my last camera only took about 80 shots before it needed recarging, and you can use normal batteries which you can get wherever you are.
